A Message from Cory & Nicol: Retiring the "Pelo Malo" Stigma this Hispanic Heritage Month
¡Hola Familia! As we kick off Hispanic Heritage Month, we are taking a moment to reflect on our roots, our culture, and the deeply personal relationship we share with our natural texture. For so many of us in the Latino community, our curly hair journey has been long, and deeply emotional. This month, we are celebrating how far we have come, reclaiming the narrative surrounding our beautiful curls, and building a culturally connected community.
The "Pelo Malo" Stigma Explained
Growing up, so many of us were taught to call our natural texture "pelo malo" (bad hair). We watched the women in our families sleep in curlers, rely on harsh relaxers, or endure endless blowouts just to make their hair look straight to fit Eurocentric beauty standards. We internalized the idea that our natural texture was something that needed to be fixed, tamed, or hidden with heavy curly hair products that weighed down our confidence as much as our curls.
Celebrating Your Natural Crown
Today and everyday, we are officially declaring that it is time to retire that phrase forever. Your hair is not hard, unmanageable, or bad. It is expressive, beautiful, and rooted in strength.
This realization is the true reason Ocoa was born. We created this brand so that all women can feel empowered to celebrate and love the hair they were born with, simply because it is beautiful. We wanted to build a space that truly cares about our curls and makes our community feel seen and represented, free from the pressure to change who we are. Our mission goes far beyond offering a simplified routine; it is about providing a sustainable curly hair care that honors your roots and gives you the confidence to wear your natural texture with pride.
Join the Sisterhood: Mi Pelo Es ___
This Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to celebrate you and the unique beauty of your texture. We want to hear your words and amplify your voice.
Send us a short video to social@ocoabeauty.com replying to this blog finishing this sentence: Mi pelo es ___ (e.g., Mi pelo es libre, Mi pelo es fuerza, Mi pelo es mi corona). We will feature community submissions all month long to showcase the true joy and diversity of our sisterhood. Let's show the world what our hair truly represents.
Abrazos,
Cory & Nicol
