4 Reasons to Avoid Mineral Oil for Curly Hair

Hola hermanas,

We all appreciate natural ingredients, but not every popular option is ideal for curly hair. Did you know that mineral oil is one of those ingredients? While mineral oil is commonly found in the beauty industry, it may not always be the best choice for curly hair.

When formulating our products, we didn’t just stop at removing silicones, sulfates, and parabens—we went further by personally co-developing every formula. That’s why we created our own NADA (nothing) list, filled with common hair care ingredients that aren’t good for our curls, and we make sure to never use them.

Learn why we say no to mineral oil in our formulations:

Heavy and Greasy: Mineral oil forms a thick layer on your hair that can make curls look flat and greasy. While it might give a glossy finish, it weighs down curls and can be problematic for fine or low-porosity hair, preventing natural bounce and volume.

Difficult to Wash Out: Mineral oil is hard to remove and can cling to your hair, causing buildup that dulls curls and makes them hard to manage. Over time, this buildup can attract dirt and lead to scalp issues like clogged follicles or dandruff.

Lacks Nutrients: Unlike natural oils, mineral oil doesn’t provide any real nourishment to your hair. It merely coats the strands without delivering the essential vitamins and fatty acids that curly hair needs. This can leave your curls feeling dry and undernourished in the long run.

May Block Moisture: While mineral oil seals in moisture, it also forms a barrier that can prevent your hair from taking in new moisture. For curly hair, this barrier can lead to dryness and brittle curls over time.

While mineral oil can be useful in some beauty products, it’s better avoided for curly hair. We recommend lighter, more nourishing alternatives like avocado oil or argan oil, which provide hydration without the drawbacks of mineral oil.

Here’s to keeping your curls light, bouncy, and nourished!
