OCOA Spotlight: Top Places to Visit in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

Hermanas, join us on the first stop of our travel series. We begin our spotlight with our birthplace, Santo Domingo, the vibrant capital city of the Dominican Republic. La Capital (The Capital), as we like to call it, is a captivating blend of rich history, stunning architecture, and lively culture. From its cobblestone streets to its modern waterfront, this city offers a unique experience that bridges the gap between the past and the present. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a culture lover, or simply seeking a new adventure, Santo Domingo has something special to offer. We are taking you to one of our favorite places to visit in nuestra tierra.

Let's take a journey through some of the top places to visit in our hometown:

  • La Zona Colonial (The Colonial Zone): At the heart of Santo Domingo lies the Zona Colonial, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas. Cobblestone streets wind through well-preserved colonial buildings, creating an atmosphere of stepping back in time. Don't miss the Alcazar de Colón, the former residence of Christopher Columbus' son, and the impressive Catedral Primada de América, the oldest cathedral in the Americas.Zona Colonial Santo domingo
  • Barra Payan (The Original Sandwhich shop):  Our Dad would take us to Payan to eat el "Payan Especial" and a Morir Soñando. This combination is a sandwich of pork, ham, tomatoes, mustard and cheese. We always paired with a beverage called Morir Soñando (to die dreaming), which is made of orange juice and milk. Add a quick stop at this historic 24-hour sandwich shop located in the heart of the national capital of the Dominican Republic. With its mouthwatering menu and cozy atmosphere, Barra Payán is a must-visit for sandwich lovers.

    • The Malecón: For a taste of the city's modern charm, head to the Malecón, a picturesque oceanfront boulevard. This bustling promenade is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a relaxing bike ride, with stunning views of the Caribbean Sea on one side and the city's vibrant energy on the other. The Malecón truly comes alive in the evenings, as locals and visitors gather to enjoy the sea breeze, street performances, and the vibrant nightlife.El malecon santo domingo
    • Los Tres Ojos (The Three Eyes National Park): Nature lovers and adventure seekers will find solace in Los Tres Ojos, a natural wonder just a short drive from the city center. This park boasts a series of limestone caves with crystal-clear turquoise lakes within them. A boat ride takes you through the caves, offering a glimpse into a hidden world of striking beauty and tranquility.Los tres ojos santo domingo
    • Mercado Modelo (Model Market): To experience the local flavors and artisanal crafts of Santo Domingo, a visit to Mercado Modelo is a must. This bustling market is a treasure trove of vibrant colors, where you can find everything from traditional handicrafts and artwork to jewelry, clothing, and local produce. It's an excellent place to immerse yourself in the city's vibrant street life and discover unique souvenirs.Mercado Modelo santo domingo

Santo Domingo's allure lies in its ability to seamlessly blend the old with the new, creating a tapestry of history, culture, and modernity. From the enchanting Zona Colonial to the lively Malecón, and the natural beauty of Los Tres Ojos, this city offers a rich and diverse array of experiences.

Exploring Santo Domingo is like walking through a living history book, where each street and monument narrates a story of resilience, heritage, and the spirit of the Dominican Republic.
