Rooted in Home: My DR Family Trip During Caribbean Heritage Month

There’s nothing like going home.

This June, we returned to the Dominican Republic—me, my husband, and our two kids—for the second time as a family. And what made it even more special? It was mango season! Talk about divine timing.

Watching my daughter pull mangos straight from the tree, just like I did growing up, made my heart so full. We ate fresh mangos daily, sticky fingers and all—sweet, juicy, and full of nostalgia. I loved sharing all the little joys from my childhood with my family: the food, the music, the traditions, and yes, a little sprinkle of Spanish here and there to keep the kids practicing.

One of my favorite moments was our Saturday trip to Bayahibe—a true Dominican beach day. Music blasting, everyone smiling, and that classic plate of fried fish right by the ocean. That energy is unmatched.

Even with all the fun, I carved out some “me” time to reset. I took a few 15-minute moments to wash my hair and treat my scalp with our OCOA collection. Being back in my homeland, using the products my sister and I dreamed up and brought to life—it was surreal. A full circle moment of pride and gratitude.

Of course, entrepreneurship never really takes a break (can I get an amen?). But I’m so thankful for my amazing OCOA team who held it down while I soaked up this beautiful time with my family. My sister and niece in DR even helped me capture some behind-the-scenes magic—we made some amazing videos I cannot wait to share, along with some huge news coming soon.

Back in the chaos of the U.S., I’m carrying this trip with me—recharged, grounded, and more connected than ever to my roots. Gracias, mi isla. I’ll cherish this forever.

Un abrazo,

Nicol
